Hi

I'm wanting to install a Richard Burbidge handrail, baserail, elements balusters and newel posts.
All looks fairly straight forward apart from the bottom newel on the bullnose step.
I've attached some photos to help explain.
I'm thinking of routing out a part of the newel post to slot the staircase string into. Securing this with anchor screws rather than wooden dowels like in the existing photos (unless you suggest otherwise)
The existing newel is also cut to fit around the stairs steps, so I was planning to do the same. Unless advice on here is to keep the strength of the full newel post rather than cut it.

Any advice appreciated.

I did something similar in my house and I'm not the most experienced of people. It was green diy but is holding well.

The burbidge newel comes in lower and upper sections. I cut the bullnose to fit the lower newel piece. It seemed to make sense to have more support to the handrail than the stair. Saying that the stair was well supported on all sides and the new newel anchored to a floor joist using coach bolts.

My stairs were different to yours in that the string didn't run into my newly installed bottom newel post, I can't imagine a small rout out to fit the string piece would hurt. Why not cut the old newel off at an angle to match the string and place the new one lower down (I had to do this to fit a stair gate on the bottom step)

Sorry if this is no help like I say I'm not great at this but worked through a solution.

Did you go through stair parts website, very much cheaper than the sheds.

Thank you for the reply.

I had considered cutting the old newel post to continue the string but then because I wasnt sure if the old newel was still as supportive as it should be as the wood that used to support the dowels/string is all split and no longer there (as photo 2).

I could fix the new newel post next to the old one (on the bullnose step) and extend the number of ballusters slightly.
But I only want to do this if the old newel is still serving a structural need that couldn't be replaced by a new newel.
The old one seems to be fixed under the screed.

I did use the stair parts website and then went to Richard burbidge website direct to price match.
