Hello again, having yet another dilemma with my vauxhall Astra. (Deisel 1.7 dti estate)
I posted here in this forum about a week ago, I had a problem with oil in the tank...
have A new problem now!

So... took key out of ignition as one does to pop into a shop, when I returned to start her back up, key turned without key gripping onto any notches, just went around. Wouldn't start...
The ignition was gone.
I called a friend and because was in a rush to get going, black boxed it and that didn't work, then tried hot wiring it.. It started for about 3 seconds then cuts out??
Guessing that it's an immobiliser making it cut out..? Is the immobiliser conected to the deisel pump?

Is there anyway to by pass it? I don't have the funds to replace the whole ignition and it's parked in a place where it has to be moved ASAP. .

Thanks.

The immobilier will show a flashing spanner symbol on the dash if it won't start, so I suggest your hot-wiring isn't up to much! You need to keep the key/chip in vicinity of the switch to start it and probably also to keep it running.

Did you try just turning the ignition switch on the back of the barrel? It should come apart. Then you'll have to work out the steering lock.

Switches and barrels are available separately. Find out which on yours is buggered then purchase as appropriate. It sounds like the barrel though.

Thank you for the replies

I have the keys, kept key in while black box / hot wiring , it started for 3 seconds and cut out???

Haven't got funds right now to call out a a or tow truck etc and have had to leave it where its parked... 3 towns away :( really don't want to scrap it, will be losing out on money big time as scrap prices have gone right down

Depending on its age i wouldn't think your car's a scrapper. Have you wired it to ignition position? If so did all lights on dash extinguish after a while, less oil can and battery?

As said, check the hot wiring, but you really shouldn't need to on a car, just replace the barrel etc as needed. We really don't know what anti-theft featurettes are installed in cars.

Have had the car towed home now.

But I still am not understanding why the immobiliser (if it's that?) Is making the car cut out when I have the keys right next to the black box? ??

All lights do go yes. I can start her up but only for 3 seconds ... Then cuts out

This 'black box' thing....is that the transponder device that wraps around the ignition switch barrel? If it is, keep it exactly in the same place, and try your spare key if you have one.
You are still using the original key right now, presumably?
John :)

Your talking about the key reader I think, its not that. The black box is on the other side, ive taken it off and hotwired it. Silly I know, but I had to move the car as it was parked in a place where it could of been clamped. Ive now towed it home, can start for a few seconds and cuts out. Got to be the immobilizer so im trying to think of ways to over ride / bypass it.
Yes still using the original key, ive had it actually in the ignition while i tried to start her up... still cut out.
Someones even suggested a live wire to the solenoid, tried it but still didnt work.
