Painting walls different colours

Hi all,
Im painting a few rooms in my houses and want to make them look bigger.

Ive seen somewhere that if you paint the walls different colours that can help, i.e one wall a darker blue, the others being light... how does this work?

We did this in our old house in the main bedroom and the lounge. To be honest - I think it made the rooms feel smaller, even though it did look nice. I think if I was to do it again I would do - say - most walls in an off white and then one wall in a complimentary colour.

I would just have the focal wall in the contrasting colour, normally where the fireplace is, and have the other three lighter.

Do not use deep or dark colours on 3 walls, then apply a light colour on the wall u want to make it feel further away. This is due to the cutting in (two different colours being deep & light) as it will bring this contrast straight to your eye. Therefore contradicting the theory. Best thing to is (depending on shape and size of room) paint your walls with light shade(s) and the wall that you want to seem further away, then try putting up 3 mirrors (but this depends again with the shape and size of room etc....). Also what is efective is to paint "the" two long walls with a light blue and paint "the" two small walls with a light cream colour or vica versa.
