Noisy PRV

Hi,

When we moved into our house we found that the water pressure was ridiculously high, it meant hozelock fittings wouldn't stay on hoses, the shower was lethal and there was a bit of water hammering.
I fitted a Honeywell PRV to the 28mm pipe right next to the incoming stop cock, this sorted msot of the problems but we are left with a system that's quite noisy, when ever something is using water there's a pssssssss noise from the PRV, like the water is just being forced through a small hole and the velocity is too high through it.
Is this normal? I thought PRVs were fairly silent in their operation.

I'd really like to improve it as the PRV is in the kitchen and it's quite intrusive as it's right by the dining table!

All I can suggest is that you encase it with something to reduce the sound.

May need to include some of the pipe too.

Funny place by the dining table!

Did you fit a large bore PRV (eg: 22mm upwards)?

It sounds like the PRV is restricting the rate of flow not the pressure.
Have you any valves surrounding it that have been partially closed off ?
What have you set the PRV too?

Thanks for your replies.

It's a Honeywell 22mm valve, installed horizontally.
All valves are fully open.

The pressure is set to 3.5 bar, before I reduced the pressure I think it was about 6 bar, maybe 7.

The large plastic dome on the PRV will unscrew to reveal a filter and there could be something in this.
Failing this I would take it back to your supplier and swop it for another one (you just need to change the dome).
Don't forget to turn the water off first!!

I have to say that in my experience they all make some noise.

Since we don't have a scientific noise measurement in dB here we don't know if yours is normal or unusually noisy.

Yes the one's I've come across don't emit any noise.
A treble bump when taps are turned off was cured by changing the dome head of the PRV.
As I stated above the noise you described is more like something restricting the flow of water and not reducing the water pressure.
Is the stop tap below fully turned on?

Yes its fully turned on.

I picked up another one yesterday so will try swapping it out today and see what happens.
