Hi all
We have recently installed a second (at least third) hand rayburn 355sfw and I am getting to grips with efficiently heating the rads. On re-reading the user manual it suggests removing the boiler side and back firebricks for winter heating use. I have done this but the bricks have broken up as the last owner informed me they would need replacing. I was alarmed at the build up of rust behind the bricks on the boiler exterior. Having read peoples complaints about boiler failure before buying the Rayburn, I am now wondering is it wise to run it without the protection of the fire bricks. Any experience or advice would be welcome.

The bricks will not prevent or protect from rust. It is probably only surface rust from where it has been stored. Give it a few taps with a hammer and if it 'rings', then it should be OK. All the bricks will do is stop the boiler getting as hot as you will need it to in winter.

Thanks. There were thick flakes of rust. Not sure what gauge the boiler walls are to start with. Does have a slight ring despite being full of water.

Please tell me you have wired in the pre-fitted low limit 'stat and included a high limit stat in your configuration....

Why bother asking for advice from professionals on here if you are then going to snap at them for giving vital extra info?

A bit of gratitude wouldn't go amiss.

The majority of Rayburn boiler failures are precipitated by cold water corrosion; A result of a failure to wire in the low limit 'stat. This combined with a propensity to skimp on an appropriate inhibitor can kill a boiler very quickly..........
I could discuss the need for 28mm primaries and an injector tee. Boil resistant f&e and the need for copper overflow but I guess \i'll get flamed for that too. Should I mention flues, heat leak and certification?

Perhaps not. I shall retire...........

You ask for advice and are given the advice you needed and also a lot more to go on to ensure the safe operation of your appliance and ways to ensure it serves you well for years to come and all for free yet you have the arrogance to bitch and moan when this advice is given to you.

If you are so certain of what you should or shouldn't be doing why exactly are you here?
