New bathroom extractor switches off ..then will not come back on

We have replaced an old exteactor which had a timer but was not connected to a live feed so it just switched off when the light was switched off. We can't put in a live feed without having to remove some tiles so we just replaced with another fan with a timer (I liked the design...don't ask

). The fan worked fine when the light was switched on. Then it stopped after a while and the light was still on. We tried switching light on and off but no joy - lights on but no fan. Hubby then disconnected the wiring and then re did the wires. Same thing happened lights on and fan ran - then stopped and wont come on again. Before I upset hubby by suggesting maybe he's wired it to the timer terminal, is this the likely cause? It doesn't seem logical but its the only thing I can think of!!! I installed a fan with similar connections last week. I connected a link wire between L & LT.

Try putting a link wire between the L and the LT terminals, it should work as expected.

The fan will need power applied to both the L and the LN terminals to run continuously until the power is turned off via the light switch.

It should not work at all without the link.
If it does work like that for a short time, I would say it is faulty.

If it stops before the light is turned off, I would say it is faulty.

Thanks guys. Will give it a go with the link. Interestingly ( or not depending on your perspective) yhe reason we replaced the old fan was b3cause it stopped working completely but the lights came on as usual. We thought the fan had given up the ghost as it was installed in 2000 so we didnt check the wiring to see if it worked after disconnecting and reconnecting.. Now wonderingbif its something else....but cant figure out why it would have changed after 15 years!!

Flaky connection between the light and the fan?

Could be but hubby tested the supply and it all looked ok and registered a current. Is it possible for the actual cable to be "flaky". When he ran it with the cove7r off it was sparking.

What did he test it with? Where was the sparking?

Not sure TBH. He's out at the mo. If you can see he photo I posted it was around the blue terminal. Not sure what that is though.

Sparking at a terminal suggests that the wires are not correctly connected, either loose, or the screw has been tightened onto the insulation.

The spark was coming from the little blue "pod" to the left of the blue terminal. Hubby didnt wire anything on the blue terminal. The wires shown are part of the unit wiring and was already there. What he did was connect the brown wire from thd supply in the green terminal marked L and the blue wire from the supply in the one marked N. Nothing in LT as there is no live feed for the timer. He reckons there is no reason for that set up not work and thinks the unit is faulty.

You need a link between L and LT.

Freddo's right, but sparks from a component indicate the unit is faulty. Take it back for replacement.

Yes he also put the link in on the advice given previously but it didnt even come on. Sorry should have said he'd tried both.
