Hi All,
Long time reader, first time contributor as they say.
So I was hoping you would be able to help me regards an small job.

The situation is in a lean-to (or as a surveyor once called it, a 'low quality conservatory') leaning against the main dwelling external wall.

This wall has an external socket box fitted assumed correct to current regs as house was rewired and certified within 10 years (although before my ownership).

The area is dry, although given the outdoor sockets, probably not technically defined as an indoor, dry environment.

I do not want to pay an electrician to add another socket in exactly the right position. Any work done needs to be non-certifiable.

I would like to power a tumble dryer in this space, but I would like the dryer a some distance from the socket.

I was hoping to use run a single socket extension lead from said external plugs through some conduit which would be wall mounted, essentially to keep the lead off the ground, to keep things tidy and safe.

Does anyone see any issues with this? As the conduit is continuous, I will need to cut either plug or socket off an existing extension cable and rewire when done or wire a plug, cable and socket myself. I have not yet looked to check if modern extension lead sockets are rewireable nor looked into the latter in any detail.

The actual job of plonking up some conduit should just take a few minutes. I'm a competent DIYer although tend to steer clear of electrics and so I just want to check there is not something catastrophically wrong with what I was planning to do.

Running a tumble dryer on an extension lead can be problematic as the sockets of many extension leads will not carry that much current without over heating. They may be rated at 13 amps but the construction is poor.

Hi Drrobj,

You may want to post some photos because they would be useful!

As regards to what you want to acheive, it sounds good in theory, but in practice, and as bernardgeen has already said, a lot of newer extension leads are maximum rated at 10A and a tumble drier would exceed the maximum rating, and some of the construction of the leads do tend to be poor and could lead to overheating of the lead, but at the end of the day, it is your choice of what you do!

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Andrew :)

Hi All,
Many thanks for the replies so far. I'll post some pictures later this evening, but there's nothing installed yet aside from the outdoor sockets!
@AndyPRK - thats a nice idea, I hadn't though of that. That will be more functional and asthetic as well - compared to having a trailing socket flapping around at the end of the conduit.
I understand that provided the sockets are either a)not already on a spur or b) are using a fused connection unit I could run a proper spur, but I'm not keen to get that way at this point.
