Going to be laying a ground floor beam and block system in my newbuld soon and in the kitchen I'm going to have an island with a gas hob. I need to get a gas and electricity supply under to the island. The gas is coming into the building from the other side of the house to supply the boiler in the utility. I'm thinking I'll need duct going under the floor from the utility to the island in a straighter line as possible. Is the right? What size duct do you think I need? What sort of pipe does the gas pipe have to be? (Ie plastic and flexible?). The run will be about 8m.

Also have a gas fire in the livingroom that I need to get a supply to but I think I can get this run through the walls / ceiling.

I haven't appointed a gas engineer yet as I'm so far off the stage of having plumbing / heating installed. I just need to get the preparations sorted so when I do get to that stage it's plain sailing.

You should appoint one now, as you are considering gas services. It doesn't matter that there will be a gap between this part of the install and latter stages. He can come back to continue the process!
The new runs have to be calculated, rated, sized, installed, capped off, possibly connected to the meter and tested before the floor goes down and is sealed!
You absolutely need to consult an RGI at this stage AND know what the gas rating is of the appliances you will be buying, that will be served by the gas supplies!

So I've spoken to a my friend who is an RGI and he has suggest one possible solution as having the gas supply to a surface mounted box on the external wall, then use copper from the meter to an adjacent wall mounted box that will have isolation valves for the 3 gas appliances in the house. From the isolation valves then running tracpipe under the beam and block floor to the appliances (through ducting so the pipe can be pulled through at a later date). The idea behind this is to reduce installation time and pipe runs through the house.

I'm going to be on the hunt for a contractor next week that I can appoint......

I would love to tell you, but I'm not going to tell someone who's clearly not gas safe and wants to do the work themselves how to run a gas pipe.

Thats not the case at all, in fact the exact opposite, I want it done right first time. I just don't want to progress other elements of the build that will effect the options available for the gas installation. I totally understand your trepidation on offering advice on a forum but please feel free not to comment on the thread if you are just going to be cryptic and the opposite of helpful.

There's also the possibility of a third party being involved here, which hasn't been mentioned...
Your local Building Control are likely to have rules regarding new gas installations! Have you consulted them at all?

Well surely, if that is the case, its obvious that you need to appoint an RGI at this planning stage who can give you the correct advice and at the appropriate time do the work?
