It's a receiver for a Honeywell wireless thermostat. So it does stuff, but you don't need to do anything to it (unless the receiver becomes unpaired from the stat)
Thank you Iggifer. In reply to fender, what happens is that the green light comes on for a while, then goes out when I'm not looking at it (hence I'm not exactly sure how long it's on ) I imagine pushing the button is something to do with the pairing process.
If it turns off by itself it is because the thermostat at the other end of the mystically radio beam is telling it that some numpty has turned the heating on when it is supposed to be off and told it to switch itself off again.
