Yup... nothing odd about that fault at all, just remake the joint as suggested making sure that its securely soldered on. I would do a re-solder of all the PCB connections white I had the iron out...

The solder it was suggested I buy is £23 - would this one do instead?

Leaded solder is hard to get these days. I wouldn't worry about it, just buy whatever Maplins have when you get that soldering iron. While you're at it, I'd glue the wire to the other side of the board so there's no mechanical strain on the solder joint. A blob of silicone would do.

It's a low cost low quality iron with Silverline on it, but for the job in question it will do.
However buy it from Toolstation, where it's cheaper and you can get the solder at the same time.
