Ear defenders

I do a fair bit of work with angle grinders, and I thought I read somewhere that there are some ear defenders that you can still hear people speak has anybody any experience of these or can recommend any. Thanks

Yes they do exist, used by some Rifle and Shotgun enthusiasts but they are banned from use in competitions, because it would be possible for the competitor to have a "Spotter" using a radio with a receiver in the Headphones to give advice to the competitor, an absolutely bizarre concept, BUT?

As for where to get them, they should be available on shooting web sites, one of the guys I target shoot with, please note I am specific about "Target" and not game or any animal for that matter! has and uses [he does not compete at that level] but I do not know what these type of defenders are called, sorry about that.

if you have no luck on such sites I can get a name but it will be next Thursday night before I am shooting with the person who has a set of such defenders just post and I will get the name for you.

Just look for electronic ear defenders. Any safety shop or ear defender supplier sells them.

You need to try them to see if they meet your needs. They block out damaging low frequencies but relay higher frequencies such as voice via a speaker. But might end up blocking voice too depending on the noise levels and type.

Thanks guys it may well be a case of closing the stable door after the horse as bolted but I will try and find a supplier that I can try a few on, I have only ever used the cheap ones £5-6 a pair so hopefully I can improve on those.

I bought some decent quality ear defenders (3M Peltor Optime 3 III Ear Defenders Muffs). I use them when operating a petrol leaf blower and they are very good, but you can also hear someone talking to you.
