Hi all,

due to paint a room this week, having attempted to carefully peel off some stickers (using hairdryer etc)..I'm left with lots of bits as shown in the picture; the paint has been pulled off down to the plaster

What's the best way to deal with this?

Thanks,

You could apply some fine surface filler or similar over the damage, sand, re-fill if necessary, then apply some watered down matt emulsion over the repair.

However, there's a good chance that plaster hasn't been 'mist coated' and so when you paint the room, some of the old paint may peel off.

A mist coat is a thinned down matt emulsion which 'seals' the plaster to allow further coats of emulsion to be applied.

It some sort of silicone(?) stuff put on it before it was painted last time (9 years ago) as the new paint started to bubble up.. will that suffice?

Also to add - you can't really see it but there's obviously flaky paint aroud the edges of the "rips", what do I do with that

cheers

first thing give it a light sand, then paint it if it shows through, then fill with a really fine filler and then carefully sand back using a fine grit paper, repeat as necessary.

Some more photos to show extent. Hope I've got enough filler.

Should I try and flake bits off? or just try and sand them down
cheers

Remove any flaky bits (but be prepared for the fact that even more will come off!) Once you have a stable edge, use filler to disguise the area, before painting over the whole lot.

I've had (or realistically still have) similar issues recently with large patches of slightly flaking paint, look very similar to your pictures. I initially tried to scrape and paint over it, didn't really work, roller just lifted the paint off the wall. Did sand some patches based on help from here. Some areas ended up flaking wall to wall. Very annoying and time consuming, but does get rid of the flaking.

I tried multipurpose filler, which partially worked but didn't leave it smooth and required quite a lot of sanding. Tried plaster repair (because I had some!) but it seems a little coarse and needed a few coats of paint to cover. Then tried some polycell smoothover and this has worked well for me for the last few patches. Sands down easily. Just put a coat of paint over it this weekend and looks good (although I'm no pro). Also saw some fine surface stuff from polycell, that was my next bet to try but the smoothover stuff has served me well thus far.

Anyway, thought I should share my filler experience since I've had a lot of great advice from here. Good luck with your decorating!

Baps.
