Hi

Can anyone confirm which type or cable I need and the size ? The cable is to be run from the consumer board to the outside garage. Cable will power a light and a 2 x 2 double sockets which will be used for the occasional bit of DIY.

Many thanks
George

An electrician will be able to decide what cable to use as he or she will be able to see how long the cable will have to be and how it will be installed. Under ground, over ground, suspended. There are many other things that need to be taken into account in the design of this new circuit.

Personally I'd say this isn't a DIY job. Seen some horrendous attempts at making off an armoured.
I'd advise getting an electrician in who would do the relevant cable sizing calcs and do a good job of it.

The light and sockets may be more 'DIYable' if you feel competent.

You almost certainly need steel wire armoured cable, as this can be buried or run outside very easily.

Always best to put a slightly larger cable size in than you need for future alterations.

Length of cable run can determine how big the cable size may be.

Hi Everyone

Sorry if I've mislead people. This isn't a DIY. I have electricians coming in and I actually offered to get the cable - (as I thought I already had it stored in the garage). I didn't want to call the electrians on a Sunday, so I just posted here on the off chance I could get an answer.

The length of the cable I need is 10m, but I just wanted to confirm the exact type before I place an order. A friend suggested I need 10mm armoured cable as it is being buried in the ground. Can anyone verify this please. If not, I can wait till tomorrow and ask the electricians. I'd just like to get the order out of the way.

If you're planning on growing a certain 'erb in the shed, you might need 10mm². We could advise you, but if the electrician you're using disagrees, your cable will be worthless. Best to just speak to him tomorrow

Lol, far too old for that sort of thing. Definitely no 'erb growing. OK, I will wait till tomorrow.

Many thanks

It partly depends on whether the electrician wants to fit a small consumer unit in the shed. Although some argue these are pointless. Anything from a 2.5 to a 10 mm2 cable would probably do in your situation - best see what the electrician wants to use.

The references above which are in italics are out of date. The principles are still valid, and you can absolutely learn valid things from them, but you will need to refer to the latest edition of the Wiring Regulations to get the correct data.

It's somewhat ironic that you have linked to Amendment No. 1 to the 17th Edition instead of Amendment No. 3...
