Masonary screws or frame screws ?

I have a passageway with brick walls on both sides and I intend to fit a timber door to discourage access. It's a fairly lightweight exterior tanalised planked door with three cross members and the appropriate braces and I propose to hang it on a piece of 4 x 2 timber with three T hinges. The door is 3ft wide x 7ft tall.

I wonder if it would be better to use masonry screws to fix the 4 x 2 to the wall or if the frame type of screw with the long plug is a better fixing ? I have actually bought 7.5mm masonry screws with a 150mm x 6mm masonry drill but a friend of mine has suggested that frame screws would be better. I can put as many screws into the wall as I like, there are no obstructions.

My question really is which of the two types is the better fixing ? Thank in advance for any help or suggestions.

Personally i would use concrete/ masonary screws but that is based on habit and speed of instalation. Hammer fixings are less neat in my opinion.

Thanks gentlemen. Sorry for the late acknowledgement but I didn't receive any notification that anyone had replied to my query. I presume that a 6mm drill is about right for the 7.5mm masonry screws. I tried a couple in a brick and they were a bit tight but the driver put them in O.K. I have also got a 6.5mm drill bit as well. Is there a rule of thumb about what size drill bit you should use for a given size of screw ?

Thanks again.

Whatever works I'd say, but a nice tight fit is good as long as they go in. Masonry bits seem to be pretty randomly sized, maybe +/-0.5mm. They aren't precision tools. I normally put a splodge of Grip Fill behind the timber as well. Holds everything nice and rigid.

With masonary screws you need a 6.5mm or sometimes a 7mm if its a very hard or soild brick. An impact driver will just about ram them into any sized hole though

Thanks again guys. I use an impact driver and will try the 6mm bit for the 7.5mm screws but if it's a bit too tight I'll go up to 6.5mm. Hadn't realised that masonry drill sizes could differ like that.

If your fixinf into the actual bricks not joints then a 6mm hole will be too small.

Amazingly the impact driver will ram it in to a 6mm hole so hard it will severly dull the actual screws threads

O.K. Thanks for that. I'll use the 6.5mm bit that I have. It's not engineering bricks or blues or anything like that. Just ordinary 3" Victorian facing bricks. Interesting point about driving into a hole that is too small. I got a single brick and tried it out in the workshop and I eventually split the brick.
