I have an old/ antique toilet roll holder. It is chrome nad has gone a bit rusty. Is there a way of restoring it. Could I sand it down and then paint it with something?

Any ideas of products that could help?

Apparently amonia is good..or ou could give it a going over with wire wool...and spray with metalic car paint.

Jenolite liquid rust remover first. Once you sand it or use wire wool it will be scratched do you'l have to paint it (or throw it away) as it will never look good again.

You cannot restore old chrome as such. The best you can hope for is that you can rid it of rust and clean it with chrome cleaner to it shiniest.

You can very gently rub the chrome spots out with a metal abrasive block but try not to touch the remaining chrome as it will dull down.

Please don't attempt painting it as this is something I did over 20 years ago and the result went straight into the dustbin, it just looked crap....!

You could always have it bead blasted and replated. Though for a toliet roll holder :?:. 'supose if it is very valuable / sentimental :?:  then this would be the absolutely ideal solution though.

there is a good metal polish used in the automotive industry called autosol, its worth a try, available in halfrauds

Thanks for the advice. Believe it or not but I am rather sentimental about this. So might look into getting it replated.

If you get it replated, make sure you have it plated to a grade suitable for a bathroom environment. I have no idea how much it will cost, I think most of the money goes on the base metal preparation. Also I don't know if electroplaters take on such small projects. Ring around, see what they say, I would guess that seeking out restoration services would be more likely to be fruitful. I doubt automotive replates would be interested, although you never know.

There are companies that replate bits for old motorcycles etc, they'll even replate nuts and bolts. Never used one, will see if I have a contact. Where are you?

p.s. automotive plating stands up to rain, dirt and salt so is a higher standard than domestic indoor fittings.

There's loads of places in London, just type electroplating services or similar into google, throws up loads of matches.

Did you get it done?
