Worcester Greenstar pcb problem

I have a 12 yr old Greenstar HE+ (ZWBR 11-35). I noticed that the programs on the boiler were not working and the boiler was constantly on. When I went into the heating settings, the screen displayed a message which I think says 'Adjustments ..... external regulator'. ( A lot of the crystals have failed on the display so it is very difficult to read.) I can't get past that screen. The same thing happens on the Hot water settings. The water pressure is ok and the boiler works in every other respect.
I emailed WB and sent a picture os display. They have responde by saying: 'It would appear that this is a critical fault on the text display and so would need replacing. The part number for this unit is 87472081030'. A new unit will cost about £250, and I am wondering if there is any other option. I've never liked the controls and would prefer to spend the money on an external programmer. Is this possible?

Help in resolving this would be appreciated.

There is a way to retrofit standard controls to your boiler but I am not sure they would work if the built in programmer is not working properly, might be time to buy a new programmer or a new boiler.

Thanks. I suspect you're right. Do I spend £250 on a new pcb (which will probably start losing its display eventually) with a rubbish programmer for a 12 year old boiler, or bite the bullet and get a new boiler (but not a Worcester!). Difficult decision.

Those early Worcester condensing boilers are far better quality than today's models, although the heat exchanger is still used on the CDi Classic range. I'd keep the boiler if the display is the only issue. Hope you've had it properly serviced ore the years.

I expect an external controller can still be fitted in spite of the failed display on your boiler.

You can fit external controls but you won't be able to force the boiler into min / max combustion modes to service it.

This is the boiler that takes the tr2 stat, according to wb no external controls can be fitted (although there is a way round this)

You did not tell us that its the second time it has failed.

Seems they are not very reliable.

But its the first time I that I have heard of that.
