I made my first mistake last week when I was doing the electrics in the flat in Germany which I posted previously about.

My friend had moved a circuit in the fusebox without telling me, and when I came to fitting a socket in the kitchen I thought I had turned the power off, but actually I hadn't!!!

So...as the wires were waaay too long, I got my pair of pliers out to cut back the cable. I was in a rush so cut both wires at the same time. The next thing that happened was:

BANG...BOOM....BIG FLASH OF LIGHT...and me shouting #*#*£...£&^$##!!!!

Fortunately the pliers had plastic coating on the handles. But I was sooo lucky not to get a big electric shock.

I will be much much much more careful from now on!!

But...does anyone know why the 10amp fuse in the fusebox didn't blow???? What's the point of having a fuse if it doesn't even blow on a short circuit?

likely because the bad connection at your short blew out first.

fuses exist primerally to protect the cable, the cable (apart from the bit right next to the fault) wasn't destroyed was it? so what are you complaing about?

I guess this is the reason we have RCDs on shower circuits instead of just a plain old fuse, right?

Ok, makes sense now.
