Hi,

I have a Vaillant TurboMax Combi Boiler. I am wanting to replace all the radiators in the house and will not be able to complete the work in one day, but wish to isolate the CH so I can still have DHW. Can I run the boiler with the CH system drained or is there a valve I can close to isolate the CH allowing me to drain the CH system but still have DHW.

Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards
Al

cut the flow and return CH pipes as far away from the boiler as you can and join them together to make a by pass and set the boiler to HW only and you will be fine for a short period

I guess you mean before the first radiator. I was just worried about the pressure with expansion in the CH side which I am assuming is why you have said "cut the flow and return CH pipes as far away from the boiler as you can"

when you join the flow and return it allows the boiler to dump excess heat that is produced when you run the HW so the longer the run the better, best case is leave one radiator connected but if you cant just link the two pipes and the boiler will be fine, the pressure has nothing what so ever to do with it

thanks for your help. I suppose the expansion tank is designed for .......the expansion

what an expansion vessel does, if you took a pan of cold water and marked the level of the water then heated the pan the level will be higher, that is expansion, the water contained in you sealed heating system behaves exactly the same way, the expansion vessel is basically a large balloon filled with air or Nitrogen and when the water expands it compresses this balloon then when it cools the balloon expands and keeps the pressure constant, not strictly 100% perfect and some arsewipe will come on and task me for my description but that is as near as you need to know how it works
