Can't disagree on "sensible" - they've profited (at least in part) from the status quo. Some have got extremely rich from it. They'd be daft to not try and maintain the situation that lined their pockets in the first place. Kinda puts a caveat on their opinion though.

Indeed, although I've mentioned amounts, does it really matter if the U.K.'s net payment to the EU is £12 billion, £8 billion, or even if it were "only" £1 billion per annum? Either way it's a vast amount of money which could do much more good kept in the country.

Exactly. Britain might trade with all of them at the moment, but it's only on the EU's terms. (The same EU which talks about "free trade" all the time.)

Obama will be long gone by the time we start discussing trade with the US after Brexit. Trump has already stated the UK would not be 'at the back of the queue', so that side of the remainers' argument is well shot. Whilst Clinton is keeping her powder dry on the matter.

Perhaps they wouldn't decide to. But at least ouside the EU the U.K. would be in a far better position to try and make the U.K. more more attractive to those buyers, because (a) they wouldn't be bound by all the EU's regulations for the overall manufacturing process of the goods, (b) they wouldn't be bound by all the related EU's bureaucratic regulations about running a business, and (c) they wouldn't be bound by the EU's regulations about how they sell U.K. products to other countries. It might actually be possible to give U.K. goods a competitive edge in one way or another, which, of course, despite bleating about free competition all the time is the one thing the EU does not want, since it regards anything which gives one country a slight edge over another as being that "unlevel playing field" and "unfair competition."
