Our toilet has just started to leak at the close couple join.

I have assumed it will be a new close couple rubber donut - or complete kit if it has rusted - that is needed, but as the toilet is an old symphonic, is that coupling different?

Don't want to take the loo apart on a bank holiday and find I need parts that wont be available for a week after ordering them - SWMBO would not be happy.

As a second point, the piping in the bathroom is very old rigid plastic. Any tips to make sure I don't shatter it when undoing the supply pipe? It's not been touched in at least 16 years.

Many thanks

Normally just an ordinary donut washer although it may be an odd size as it's an old WC.

Thanks
Obviously the donut has seen better days, as has the lower seal.
What is that seal called and where do I get one

I think the flush washer has also gone so probably need to replace that as well

Linked to Lunns, but their prices are astronomical compared with Denso's link!

Ensure when putting cistern back onto the pan, that the small dome washer sits firmly over the hole where the air tubes passes into the middle chamber of the pan. It is vital it seals correctly otherwise the aspirator wont create a vacuum in the middle chamber and the syphonic action wont work!

Bought the airex seal from Toolstation, and some stem washers. Might be false economy but I'll give them a go tomorrow.
If not I suppose it's £65 - £70 for a syphon, and aspirator.

The standard donut is no use for this toilet though. I may have to reuse the old one for the moment. It is perished but doesnt seem to be leaking.

Ok, so I've fitted the airex donut, fixed all the leaks, but now appear to have lost the siphon effect.
Any ideas?

Not on a DT syphonic pan he can't.

Is the syphon washer fitted the right way round and seated properly on the chamber - if the new doughnut washer is too thick then it can lift the siphon washer off it's seating.

That small doughnut washer on the end on the aspirator tail is critical as I said previously. It must make an airtight seal where it sits to allow the aspirator to make a vacuum in the middle chamber of the pan, this is how the syphonic action is created.

I always sat the washer on the end of the tail, then very carefully lowered the cistern onto the pan, to ensure the washer was gently pushed up the aspirator tail, ensuring a snug seal once the cistern was seated correctly.

Thanks for the replies.
I took it apart and put it back together and it all seems to work.
I guess something wasn't quite sitting right.
