Swapping Part Of Gate Valve ?

Hi,

Please could someone offer a little help.

This valve is on the top of our hot water tank, could it be a Surrey ? - It feeds the shower, but has a very poor flow.

I have a feeling the valve is not opening fully and certainly is not closing fully, so I am thinking of replacing the "centre gate" section only ?

Can I do this ?

If so, how do I stop the hot flow of water to it ?

What happened to open safety vent???...I take it cylinder is vented as opposed to unvented?
Not yet come across a surrey/essex flange fitted to an unvented??

You may encounter a problem should cylinder cold feed ever get isolated/frozen.....

Hey stoyer , the least of your problem being repairing that gate valve...

I would suggest just removing the gate valve.

there should be another gate valve on a pipe that goes into the bottom of the cylinder. It may be in the airing cupd. next to the cyl. or near to the tank in the roof feeding it. Trace the pipe from the cyl. bottom.

Op: please tell us that there is a 22mm pipe going from the pipe which that gate valve is on, from the top of your cylinder up into the loft and that it bends over the top of your cold water storage tank and has an open end, just above the water level!

It should be there... Before the gate valve! I'm hoping your photos are deceiving us

Stoyer you need to remove that gate valve like yesterday. It has been suggested at least twice already

I think it's a warick flange, the vent pipe is probably hidden behind the body of the flange in the pic ( at least I hope so )

It is, I've fitted it before like that. I can just see the hot outlet/vent pipe behind.

Hello, thanks for your replies - although you have me slightly worried. Please see other photos, hopefully we are not about to blow up !
This was fitted with the new bathroom, hot water tank, boiler and shower when we moved in, around 2002.

Could someone reassure me all is ok please ?

The gate valve on the top of the tank will not stop the flow of hot water to the shower valve.
Therefore I would like to swap it or part of it.

Can you help please ?

Nige F, will turning the lower feed stop hot coming out ?

Don't panic!

Your second photo of the new set shows the T off to the vent pipe so you're all good

To shut off flow through the gate valve you want to change, you'll need to trace the pipe that comes from the tank in the loft and goes into the lowest connection on the cylinder - see if it has a valve on it that you can close, if it does then close this and you can then remove the gate valve at the top... Draw some water off from hot tap downstairs first and be sure that it stops running - be prepared for a little spillage from water left in the pipes when removing the gate valve and you should be good to go... I would change it for a lever valve body rather than another gate valve.

Yes it will, it'll be one of those old red valves on the painted pipes in your pic.- trace the pipe to the bottom of the clyinder . You can't change the innards of gate valves and you don't want that one on the top of the cylinder( as others have said ) ALSO check that pipe from the flange does go to a vent over the feed tank ( as per Picasso and Danny )

Is there/was there a pump at the bottom of the cylinder? Can't think why there would be a warix there if no pump present, no need for it.
The gate valve was probably for an older pumped HW installation and it's redundant if there's no pump, just remove it. Or go buy a pump cause it's all ready for one.
