Can you really do this??

I think it "complies" if the adjacent walls are heat resistant.

But when used for cooking it would be a nightmare with no working place for pans when they have to be taken of the hob

wont have that view for long eh.

not once theyve built a couple of hundred houses on that field.

It's not the hob that's an issue, it's the electrical socket above the hob that's the should be questioned.

I always thought you had to have x mm left and right of a hob for pan handles.

Most (?) hobs state a 5cm. space at the side - not much but more than it looks in the picture.

As for the switch and socket, there are no actual regulations but just common sense and they haven't used any - especially using a switch with a socket.

I thought the space was to nearest combustible surface? So a tiled wall acceptable?

Didn't know that! I presumed there was, and were made to disconnect ours off by the chap who installed our gas cooker when we moved in, oh and promise that we would get rid of it. He very nearly didn't install the gas because of the socket, so he was just being uber safe then?

Bloody cheap for a 4 bed house with garage. Could get 30 EE's paying £100 a week each in a similar property in Croydon.
Southerners have such a weird take on what's a reasonable price for a house

No, just general regulations regarding good workmanship and introducing hazards.

As there is not an actual requirement to have a cooker switch, obviously there are no rules regarding where to put it.

Probably - or if it was a fitter from one of the big stores, they have their 'standard' installation methods and if anything is different than what they're used to, they don't really know what to do.

If I bought something for half a million quid I would expect more effort to have gone into its appearance. Property makes no sense.
