Hi

I live in South East England.
Can somebody give me a rough idea what this work should cost.
I want to run some power to an outdoor wooden garden shed.
I have a timber framed car port which already has a consumer unit.
It needs 15m of wiring inside the car port which I’m happy just to be tacked on to the wooden frame with cable clips no need for any hidden wiring.
There’s 10m of outdoor wiring to the shed. I have already dug the trench to lay the cabling which I’ll fill in myself.
The shed needs wiring for 4 double sockets and light switch.
I have already bought the sockets and light switch but not any back boxes.
The inside of the shed will be boarded with ply so any wiring behind here doesn’t need to be neat as it will be hidden.

Thanks

There are a lot of variables. Much depends on the supply side - if there is adequate protection there already, can the earth of your supply type be exported, or will it require an earth electrode and RCD at the outbuilding end etc. What is the feed to the existing CU in the car port, is it adequate to add you expected loads.

The only way to estimate this is to go on site and check all of this as it will impact on the price.
Get 3 registered electricians to give you quotes. Its the only way.

The load should be plenty enough as it's 32A and only running some lighting at the moment.
I'm only looking for a ballpark figure really.
What's the price with and without RCD at the outbuilding end?

Allow the same amount of money as you would spend for a day, maybe more, for bed with breakfast.
It could be a Travelodge, or it could be The Ritz. It depends also on where in the UK you live.
These guys will charge you £85 per hour plus materials, for instance:eek:.

As I said, it all depends......

So.........
Roughly how many hours work would you say it is?
Roughly what's the cost of the materials?
As I said I'm not looking for an exact quote....

Who's supplying the SWA?
What size might it be?
How deep did you dig the trench?
Will an RCD be required at shed/house end?
Will an earth electrode be required at shed/house end?
How will the 4xdouble sockets be connected to the SWA from the house end?
What work will be needed in the CU in the car port?

Labour wise, each of the above may have a time impact of between 0 and 4 hours
Materials wise, each of the above may have a cost impact of between £0 and £?
So, you do the arithmetic and add it up. Which ever way I look at it, I end up with a total of approximately £?

The only way to estimate this is to go on site and check all of this as it will impact on the price.

Did you buy a light switch or a switched fused connection unit? You cannot run a light off the same circuit as sockets without a fcu.

Unless of course the electrician chooses to fit a garage consumer unit in the shed.
