Hi All

I am toying with the idea of getting an electric car. If I did, I would need to get a charger installed. I would use an electrician for this; I've no intention of doing it myself.

My garage and carport are about 20m from the house. There is a 2 fuse fusebox (and I do mean fuses) in the garage currently, and the wiring inside the garage is somewhat dated and inadequate.

In the house, there is a 50cm ish piece of 6mm T+E going to a plastic box, out of which comes 6mm SWA. That goes underground for about 20m, then above ground to another plastic box where it goes back to 6mm T+E, into the garage, for a metre, then into the fusebox. The SWA and these bits of T+E are pretty new. The fusebox and the rest of the internal wiring are not new. Next to where the SWA comes out of the ground you can see an older piece of SWA that's been cut off - presumably that one was damaged or something.

So my question is, subject to testing etc, is the supply cable in principle, adequate for a 32A EV charger in the garage? or will a new supply need to be laid?

I'd have an electrician rewire the garage and install the charger. I want sockets and some better lighting in there while i am at it.

But the prospect of having to lay a new supply cable changes the hassle factor significantly.

Thanks

Have a look at the documents here at the EVHS scheme which can give grants up to £500 through authorised installers for a charging point installation. The installers should also be able to give you advice on the existing installation. I believe there are additional complexitites with charging points regarding earthing.

But it may well not be adequate to supply a 32A EV charger and the existing circuits.

Check the voltage drop specification for the charger - some are very fussy about their input voltage.
