Need to build a stand for a garden bbq "Play Your Cards Right" game.

We've purchased large laminated playing cards, each 30cm tall and 21cm wide.

There needs to be space for 4 cards on the bottom row, 4 cards on the middle row, and 2 cards on the top row.

Was thinking of getting a sheet of 20mm mdf, getting this cut at the timber yard into 110cm wide / 120cm tall (ie. The main board, to accommodate 4 x 3 cards plus the shelves to hold the cards), and also getting the yard to cut the 3 "shelves" (110cm wide / 7cm deep). Then gluing the shelves to the main board.

Thoughts on whether this will work / any alternative way to build it?

We'll also need to find a way of ensuring it can actually stand up, so need some sort of support behind it but not sure the best way to build the support / what materials/hinges I'll need. The support would allow the board to sit angled perhaps 15 degrees back from the vertical.

As an alternative to shelves you could fit strips of plastic or ali channnel.
A couple of triangles of mdf screwed to the rear will make stands to hold it at correct angle.

What kind of plastic? What is Ali channel?

If we're using the mdf triangles on the back, what kind of hinges should we use to allow the triangles to fold flat against the main board when not in use?

i would avoid mdf as its no good with moisture or wet
i would also opt for 12mm ply
if you have it angles back a bit you only need a baton at each level for the cards to sit on

Aluminium or plastic available in several widths.

Piano hinge would be my choice, but not important.

Thank you.

How would you attach the plastic channel to the frame?

Also, for the stand, given it is 110cm wide / 120cm tall, how many triangular wedge stands should we cut/attach, what material should we use for these (ply?), what sizes should each triangular wedge be, and what size/thickness of piano hinge should we use (also is it only piano hinge we should use, not any other kind of hinge)?

Having considered the other posts I'm now also going to use 12mm ply for the main frame/board rather than mdf.

the way i would tackle this assuming you would like it to easily fold flat

find out the overall comfortable height for the board and legs
cut 4 legs to this length made from 2x1" planed and attach one to the front each side flat face showing making sure you cut the board wide enough to accommodate these timbers
now heres the clever bit make another board the same size or slightly smaller overall but same height for a different game or as a blackboard again with legs to the front[back] face
1m piano hinge at the very top but screwed to the inside back face [through the ply face back towards front face] using 3mmx 12mm or no4 by half inch screws for the full length to form an "A" frame from both boards
drill a hole in each leg 2 lengths off rope to space legs far enough appart to stand as required
it will now fold flat around 70mm thick

you will be fine with a piano hinge a 1.5mm pilot hole and screw every hole
just tighten by hand the last turn to avoid stripping

Is it possible to get a metal shelf bracket that only juts out 3 inches?

Could then use a couple of these along with shelves of 18mm thick and 3" depth plywood.

Yes, perfect!! Would have helped if I'd searched on "brace" rather than "shelf bracket"!!!

Will this be ok to hold 18mm thick plywood shelves (75mm depth, 1350mm long) onto a 18mm thick plywood sheet, 1350mm wide by 1050mm tall?

The only thing that well rest/sit on the shelves are the laminated playing cards.

If so, what size screws should be used?

i think they use no6 so number6 x 5/8" as the ply may be less than 18mm so a 3/4" screw may break the surface
you could also use 3.5mmx 16mm

Thanks again.

Does the vertical on the brace have to be at least the same length as the horizontal?

Would prefer a shorter vertical if possible.

are you placing them behind and underneath [out off site]
or in front and ontop ??

dont forget when planning if your shelves are 3" deep then the back board needs to be the 18mm longer to cover the back off the shelve or the shelve has to be 3 and 3/4" to sit under the back board
in general you would plan the surface needed for cards times the number off cards with say 6-12mm space for fingers and clearance on every shelve and the thickness off every shelve or spacer added to this figure
