Hi,

We've just had some understair storage installed which meant knocking though the inside wall under the stairs into what used to be a coal store accessed from outside.

All fine apart from this metal bar sticking out from the brick work (see picture). Does anyone have any idea on what this is, what it's for, whether I can remove it and the best way to remove it?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, good evening.

Your metal rod appears to be an old shelf bracket???

To remove? tap gently with a hammer in all directions, up down, left right, it should then pull out?

Ken.

It looks rather substantial so I think more than a shelf. I have seen that type used to support a sink. In old terraced houses it might be double length, with your neighbour's sink standing on the other side. I know this because when I had a terraced house, my neighbour was refitting his kitchen, lifted off the belfast sink, bashed the bracket to loosen it and started pulling it out of the wall, his neighbour (other side) screamed that her sink was tipping over.

In which case cut it off.

Intresting. This is a wall adjacent to my own kitchen but there's no sink on the other side... At least not anymore!

So it's nothing like a brace of some kind to help hold the wall together or anything crazy like that then?

Might it once have been a washhouse? The brickwork is very nicely pointed.

Who knows it's a 1920s house so quite possibly.

Thanks for your help guys, I'll see if I can knock it out.

Stand next to it - if it's higher than cock height it's not from a sink (y)

Gave it a knock and a yank and it popped out with only about 1.5 inches going into the wall. So looks like it was just an old shelf bracket.

Thanks again everyone.
