The lap top was getting very hot, so I tried removing the battery and it ran cooler, the battery would only give minutes of life in a power cut so I had known it was past best for years.

So new battery ordered and fitted and lap top running much cooler, however the battery instructions said allow it to fully charge, then disconnect power and allow computer to fully discharge battery. Then charge again, and repeat this every 6 months.

On doing this I now get on switch on an alert that the hard drive is failing and I should back up files, maybe as the hard drive in question is solid state? I am sure the hard drive is not failing, it was just the computer going flat and it has miss written to the drive.

Is this normal? and how do I stop the alerts on boot up.

if you purchased a quality OEM Li-ion cell based pack - you don't need to discharge and recharge the way you have been advised. If its an after market one then it may not have a balance circuit in (or any other safety features) and the discharge process may be an attempt to "cook" the cells evenly. Your hard disk is complaining that data blocks are being corrupted, probably due to power off occurring mid process. Your original pack may be repairable as normally its only one or two cells that have failed.

Do you know if the computer went in to hibernate or standby by prior to low power shut off? You might want to review your power management settings/

It sounds more like a SMART error than a RAID one, sometimes you can turn off SMART in the BIOS. (Got to love all those acronyms!)
