Hi,

The previous owners of our house stained the fence panels and (huge) shed black. We'd like everything a lighter colour if possible, is there any way of doing this which doesn't involve either replacing panels or sanding down everything? I've been looking at the Ducksback range to see if that might work, I realise several coats could be involved and if that will do the job then I'm happy to do it.

Any advice is appreciated!

I'm not sure about Ducksback covering in light colours, you could try it in Autumn Gold - the lightest they do. I've just done an old door with Sadolin light colour over old weathered brown - a kind of distressed weathered look. And I had the ( expensive) Sadolins in store. I would go for the Ducksback on the fences first then try a patch on somewhere hidden on the shed. No need to sand down the fence - maybe the shed if it's badly flaking etc.

And that should cover over the black? Everyone we've spoken to says there's no way to change a fence panel that's black to something lighter without replacing the actual panel!

Thanks for the reply!

Guess it depends what they actually put on. Was it stain, oil, paint, preservative etc.

I managed to use my Karcher on ours which blasted off all the green paint? I then got a nice new looking fence which i sanded down and painted with Ducksback

I'm pretty sure it's stain (sorry not able to check right now), I have considered giving it a blast with the pressure washer to see what happens!

You might get away with painting over it, but you'll need a hell of a lot of paint!

I was afraid that might be the case...Personally if it were up to me I'd go back over it all with black (it needs doing anyway, it's starting to fade etc) but I'm currently being overruled!

Pressure washer is a good first choice...always comes off our fence even when your not trying to get it off!..lol otherwise get a mouse or small sander and do one side at a time...soon be done.

Thanks for the reply, we've actually tried a tester and found that Cuprinol Garden Shades should do the job…anyone used it before?

Just about to mention Garden shades. Yes, I've used it for furniture and for a shed - works excellent and our shed was previously painted black too. 2 years on and the shed still looks good.
The only problem I've found with garden shades is different colours cover with various degrees of success. Some are very thin and watery - and I've taken those back to the shop because as far as I am concerned, unless it covers in 2 coats, it's not working!! :)

Ah that's great to know, thanks…We've got quite a lot to cover (fences and a very large shed) so slightly worried about the amount we'll need! Also not sure what colour to use but at least there are options now.

If it helps, if you're going more white/cream, I found 'Muted clay' the only one of the paler ones to work well and cover in 2. Tried country cream, pale jasmine and natural stone and they were all thin and didn't cover after 4 coats. Same as a bright pink colour that I wanted for my bench at the allotment but am sure you'd not want that on your fences!!

Hope all goes well and most of the time there's an offer on garden shades to be found.
