Hi all,

We are looking to have some walls knocked down in our home to create more space and are likely to need a few steel supports as these walls are likely load bearing.

We have a structural engineer who has advised on what may need to be done, but wants to come out and check the load path of the floors and roof. He will include design of the beams and support details too.

Any idea of what sort of cost we should be looking to pay a structural engineer for this work?

You should get a quote before he starts any work. It sounds like it will be say £200-500. Depends on his rate doesn't it?

He's advised £800

I am new to all of this and really unsure of the approach to take with such matters. Trying to find a structural engineer is a challenge in itself!!

Hi

I have just had a small extension built. The build consisted of 3 steels and all the structural calculations for 2 vaulted roofs. The cost was £500.

We've had a two storey with 4 steels, 4 new lintels inserted to existing and a rebuild of the roof structure as well as foundation design, and all that was less than 2k+vat in London. It also included 2 initial site visits plus 3 visits during construction.
However we contacted about 10 SEs and got quotes from about 5 to find one that was interested, competent, and economical.
For complex projects a good SE will save you their fee, and give a better result to boot.

Difficult to advise really we don't know what you're doing. And all SE fees vary. Some are better value than others.

First check that your local council does not have "pre-approved" steel beam sizes for typical domestic work, as if so, you don't need an engineer's design or calculations.

The should normally charge based on hourly rates. A simple beam should one hour, so no more than £150. That will include the bearings and padstones.

As freddy said straight off. £150 for a beam + site visit + a tad more for additional beams = £200-500.
