hi,

I would like to get a new consumer unit to replace the Wickes own brand one that was in the flat when I bought it.
I would like to get one that obviously meets all the relevant legal requirements but also one that is made by a reputable company and contains any safety features such as built in RCDs. Cost is not much of an issue, I'd rather quality.
I have a two bedroom flat. Not sure how many lighting circuits or ring mains I have at present but would like to make sure I'm not overloaded. Would two of each be sufficient? I would also like a separate circuit for my shed and porch. I also have solar which will have to be added.
Can anyone give me advice as to what make and models to look at?

Thanks
Degsy

Opinions will vary, and the best approach would be to take the advice of the electrician who is going to replace the CU.

The only thing I would say is that there is not necessarily anything wrong than the CU you already have. Are you thinking of having it changed only because it is Wickes branded, or is there some other reason?

Kind Regards, John

Wicked don't make CUs. They put their name on someone else's.
I would have thought that everyone would understand that (that's why I said 'Wickes branded') - just as they understand in relation to all other 'own brand' products found in DIY stores, supermarkets or wherever.

Kind Regards, John

I think DS was suggesting it was GET? I tried to have a look to see, but I can't see them on their website, and the only images on google are useless, and just of the body, no devices. Ugly as sin though

It's more the safety aspect which is the reason I want to change it. CUs come with built in RCDs which this one doesn't have. Also, I am having it moved and the new location would need a flush fitting one that goes into a stud wall.
I will be asking the sparky once I hire one but I'm doing a bit of research first so I am more clued up.

Yeah, it was Great Eastern Trading. Before that they were JAC. John Anthony Cousins. Now Schneider.

I would have Hager. See if your choice of spark agrees.

Hager seem to have the best reputation at the moment for a quality job.

BG are usually keenly priced and adequate for an economical job.
