Blocking off internal door

Hi all, need a bit of advice.

I've recently retired and purchased a house, which I don't have a mortgage on. The house is a bit of a quirky one and has two separate staircases at each end, with no link between the two sides upstairs and just one connecting door to get from one side of the house to the other on the ground floor. My son and his wife have recently had a baby and are renting, therefore struggling with a deposit.

So my question is, if they moved into the house, can I block up the internal door? I'd put them a little kitchen in as well in the other side but the house would have one water supply, electric supply etc. I'm hoping this wouldn't be a problem as I own the house and am not looking for any financial gain or selling/letting the other half out etc.

Any thoughts??

If the property is not listed it should be fine, make sure you are not causing an obstruction in case of a fire, but why block the internal door, surely an easier option would be just to fit a lock on it. No hassle then should options change in the future.

Well I was planning on redesigning my kitchen which would block the door off. Really guess I just need to know if I need any extra regs as its a member of my family living there. I'm expecting a separate council tax bill though.

Yep if you create a an annexe that essentially is capable of supporting independent dwelling, however your part may be eligible for some discounts depending on your age or "health". For example if it were "necessary" that your Son lived with you due to your age, then it might be possible for you to get some or all of your CT discounted
