To capture the most solar gain in my proposed garage roof I'm interested in your views of fitting double glazed units to replace the bottom 3 rows of concrete roof tiles along the south facing elevation, similar to a conservatory style roof.
I've never seen this done and wonder if it's possible. My builder suggests a couple of Velux with light tunnels but I'm not too keen.
Any suggestions please?

If you don't use proprietary windows what do you expect to use? Fitting some DG units in some ad-hoc manner is likely to end up failing ie leaking.

I can understand why you might do this for light, but what is the objective of the solar gain? From a thermal insulation point of view any gain will be lost due to the higher U value of the glass. Even triple glazing only manages a U value of 1. If its about keeping the place warm, you are probably looking at the wrong solution.

I want to use the garage space as a workshop/ studio so require as much natural light as possible. Velux will only give a small area of localised sunshine. There is no possibility of windows in the walls

Have you thought about using polycarb they sell it at the sheds and you can
buy the snap down glazing bars to go with it.

They came you on the delivery. Over 100 quid for a 1m by 1m unit. Look for a local company.
