Computer in Cupboard with Gas Meter

Hello,

I have an old computer which I intend use as an always on server. I also have a pantry style cupboard in my kitchen which would be an ideal place for the server as it is cool, ventilated, has a plug socket and is made of brick so sound insulated.

The only catch is the gas meter is also in this cupboard. Is it safe/allowed to put the server in this cupboard?

Yes - unless you can smell gas in which case it's not safe for anything to be in with the gas meter

You can run up quite an electric bill doing that.

It depends what you want the machine to do. If its downloading, streaming and NASing, and not hibernating, then given the likely PSU in the desktop it could be costing £250 a year in power. It could consume as much as 70 x more power than a dedicated NAS

As above, it's suprising how much power an old, inefficient PC uses. I have a HP Microserver mainly because it's low power yet more flexible than a NAS. My estimate is £70 a year to run this.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll give it some thought. It probably wont cost me that much more as the same pc is currently my desktop and is already on 24 hours a day.
