Hi,

I have a Hundai Lantra estate, 1999, 1599cc.

Over the last couple of weeks it's been playing up, fist noticed the air bag light came on and the windscreen wipers started to go slower. Then the radio started to cut out when accelerating away and coming back on when slowing down. Today it cut out completely when driving along and now won't start, when I try to start it has almost no power like the battery is dead but the battery is only 4 months old.

Is this likely to be an alternator problem? If so do you know the approx cost to replace one and is is it possible to DIY?

Thanks.

It would sound like your battery voltage is very low.....it can be checked if you have a multimeter - look for 14.4v with the engine running. Less than this would indicate a dud alternator.
Sorry I cant help with the alternator removal if a new one is required, but its often necessary to remove the radiator first. Maybe YouTube can help you there?
John :)

Can't even recall what a 1999 Hyundai Lantra looks like. A rare survivor.

maybe it has a zintect body.

IIRC Sonatas used to be good value for a big car with an unfashionable badge.

Good luck with this, and I really mean it!!!! We had a Hyundai Lantra a few years back with the same symptoms you describe, we changed voltage regulator 3 times, we changed alternator 2 times, we had an Auto Electrician look at it, we had 3 different batteries fitted, we cleaned every earth strap we could find and the bloody thing still kept getting a flat battery!!! In the end we charged the battery up and sold the bloody thing on! I'm not slagging Hyundai off, infact, todays Hyundai are an excellent motor car.
