Eroding brickwork

After some advice please. In the attached picture we have a few bricks (all on the same level) on one side of the house, which look to be eroding a bit. This side of the house does not get much sun which is most probably does not help as the rest of the house is unaffected.

Is there anything that can be done for these, or would it involve replacing the brick itself?

House was built in the late 90's. Have also attached one that is unaffected.

Are they actually bricks?
Or are they stone effect bricks or even composite stone slip tiles?
Whats the purpose of the ledge/plinth?
Can you post a pic of the whole elevation?

Are your walls solid block or cavity?

The actual problem with that, is that the mortar is too strong.

You could try a clear water repellent, and this might cast most of the rain off the surface reducing the amount that is absorbed.

As above, could be frost damage.

is there a concrete floor inside at about that level, and is there any chance of a water leak?

Assuming a cavity wall, a leak occasionally happens where a pipe (such as a cistern overflow) passes through the cavity, possibly higher up the wall.

To my eye, it looks like a course of softer/more absorbent bricks was laid, for no apparent reason.
