Hi!
I have been getting sewer smells 70 percent of the time after I use the kitchen sink. The smell doesn't come from the sink but originates from a corner of the house where outside there is a gully to which the kitchen waste drains. When I went outside to inspect the gully I could smell it. Now the gully has water in it acting as a trap so how is it possible that sewer gas seeps through? Help! Thanks in advance.

Possibly just needs a good clean, jet wash. Otherwise it could be cracked somewhere under the surface! What's the groundworks like around and about it? Does it serve just the kitchen sink?

Type of gulley? Plastic versions can have a removable plug or funnel to provide access for clearing the outgoing drain. If this is missing you will get drain odours coming back out the gulley.

The gully serves the kitchen sink, washing machine and bath tub. The ground works around it seem normal and it's a clay gully. I'll try to clean it as suggested.

how old, and which part of the country?

Jeyes fluid down the gulley and cheap thin bleach down the sink NOT at the same time though ! That will clean most things.

The house is in luton and was built in the 1930's. I moved in a year ago. Don't know if there have been changes to the gully.
I poured buckets of water down the gully and the water runs clean. But the smell is still coming through when I use the kitchen sink

How do the waste pipes, particularly the pipe from the sink, connect? Or even better, can an we have a photo of the gulley and the pipework from the sink going into it please? Wondering now if its a back inlet gulley and something has broken.

The smell is coming from the overflow on the kitchen sink.

Remove the waste trap under the sink and the flexible overflow in which you will find grease and fat which smells when the sink is used.

Thank you and good night. (don't forget the 'thanks' button) ;)
