Hello all

Just had to go out my son’s Hyundai i20 2010, non-starter with flat battery.

When I got there battery was almost turning the engine over but not quite enough, but it wasn’t totally flat. I hooked up jump leads and it started immediately and is fine now, except that the on-board clock and trip meter have reset as if the battery had been disconnected.

Is this normal does it suggest a fault somewhere?

Thanks…

I wouldn't worry about anything for now, the high drain on a low battery can easily cause this - sometimes the radio memory is lost too.
Has the Hyundai been standing a while?
John :)

It was probably the act of trying to start with a flat battery that reset everything, the voltage would have dropped below the critical point.

If the battery is as old as the car- 6 years- it's probably due for replacement. Tell them to get it tested. If we have a cold winter, it's likely to finish it off.

And it failed again tonight! Restarted on jump leads drove it home and within 3 hours it was flat again. Can't see anything causing it to drain so i think it's all pointing towards a duff battery, it's the original so perhaps it's done ok

I'd say six years was minimal life for an OE battery, but of course we don't know what use it has had. For sure, a motor factor can happily put a heavy load test on the battery and sell you a new one if need be.
Its also doing basic checks on the charging system - with the engine running, you should find the battery voltage to be around 14.4v.
