Im guessing he's trying to get a fitting on and each time he think he has, it just blows off again. Some serious hot water pressure there. Almost impossible whilst water is on.
Being there and done that, it also helps opening all the other taps, especially the kitchen and garden taps.

most plumbers have been in a similar situation, i know i have!
first thing he needed to do was to open all the other taps and take the pressure off.
if he couldn't get a fitting on set about flattening the pipe.
although that's easy for me to say in front of my pc at home!
