Asbestos in Loft and needs removed

There will likely be a big cost for the licenced removal company to make the enclosure in any case. If route is via the house, then the cost is largely the enclosure and removal, and potentially making good any decorations - so mainly the asbestos contractor work. If the route is through the roof, then there is additional cost for a scaffolder and a builder to access the roof and keep it watertight.

The OP needs to get it looked at by an experienced removal firm, and take advice. Bare in mind that an experienced independant asbestos analyst firm will advise on more specific health and safety issues that the material might present, and this might be better initially that a removal contractor's advice - as any removal contractor has a vested interest in the removal work.

I haven't slept since I found out how dangerous this asbestos is
It is in poor condition and bits are missing
I am beside myself with worry because we have never known about this asbestos.
We have been up a d down in this loft over 25 years
I just want to vomit and am an emotional wreck

You really must get a picture here for us to look at. I do appreciate your genuine fears but quite seriously if you get your phone on a stick and put it through the loft hatch you will be minimising any risks. Many people here will recognise straight away what is there.

A photo would really help.

What town are you in? I may know a trustworthy firm nearby, to put you in touch with for an opinion.

I wouldn't worry too much, certainly don't let it get you down.

There is asbestos in many places where we all go everyday.

I haven't slept since

In context, that will be causing you more harm than any possible exposure to the stuff in your loft.

Any fibre release is minimal, and the fibres are so light that they get sucked out of gaps in the roof due to ventilation and air pressure, or cling to sticky stuff like felt or masonry. And the fibres are miniscule and diluted by the air.

So your potential exposure risk is very very low.

I am really appreciating the advice and support. My neighbour has the same tank but theirs is wrapped in plastic and all sealed.
Think our loft may have been missed.Despite her plastic protection she said bits a re lying in the bottom of the plastic.
I think a lot of the price will be to remove years and years of all sorts parks dolls soft toys bedding blankets the loft is packed.
All the flooring has to come up ,the insulation and we even have 7 rolls we never put down.I can't get a picture the door h a s been shut I don't want to thick what's there.

Now I am no expert, but if the tank is undisturbed, how much risk can it cause? Are there flakes all over your loft? At the prices you are being quoted, I would..... and I repeat that, I WOULD (not that you should), get a paper suit, decent P3 dust mask and a large plastic bags big enough to cover the whole thing in one bag the thing up in the loft carefully without disturbing it and then leave well alone....... The people who suffer from asbestosis, mesothelioma or what ever horrid lung conditions are related to asbestos are the poor buggers who were carpenters and builders all their lives before the problems were well known and cut, drilled and messed with the stuff every day.... not that anyone now should knowingly expose themselves even once....

Or if you will never sleep again for the rest of your life, get a company to remove - at a big cost.

Hello
I Will be getting a company to remove it at big cost to us but less than this absolute dispair that I currently feel .
I am absolutely blown away by this and not in a good way.
I thank you all for tAking time reply and to save me from the mad people who have given advice on assumptions and not on facts or knowledge

Why are you even bothering to remove it? Seems like a lot of panic over nothing?

If you're really insistent on worrying over nothing, wrap the thing in a bunch of layers of plastic sheeting and then forget about it.

If you ever happen to get your roof replaced have it removed at that point in time. It's free to dispose of at your local council tip provided you double bag it.

I offloaded 500kg of asbestos roofing material just recently, just donned a mask, bagged it up and off it went.

Absolutely zero need to be stressed about it.

Hello again looking for more advice 10 days into this and different questions now.I missed the note about an analyst
Do I need an analyst if everyone is saying this has. To come out?
How do I pick a firm if have only contacted licensed contractors ? Why does the time to clear the loft vary from 5_8 days
I am past the losing possessions and lots off money bit now and just want this done safetly so we can perhaps move for ward
There is no insurance e for this type of thing in your home Nd most information for householders is very limited .
Thanks again

They would double wrap the tank to ensure it's fully sealed before they move it. IMHO it would be far easier making the loft hatch bigger and bring the tank through this opening, not only cheaper but easier.

I have my 405 in asbestos and my advice is to have someone sample it to determine which type of asbestos it is. this will determine what needs to be done.

It might be a case of encapsulating it and leaving or removing it but the sample will tell you this.

Any chance of some photos?

Hopefully others with more experience will answer more of your questions...

How do I pick a firm if have only contacted licensed contractors ?

It's not easy to choose a contractor for any job. In theory, you should get several quotes, rule out any where you don't feel confident that they are honest and competent, and then choose the cheapest remaining one. In practice - whatever you do, there's a danger that later you'll suspect you made the wrong choice. You need to be a bit fatalistic about it.

Why does the time to clear the loft vary from 5_8 days

Perhaps the quicker job is based on more people on site?
Perhaps they're just optimistic?

Thanks for the replies ,I. Don't have pictures although all who quoted took pictures on site
it is spray asbestos (blue) it is old and in poor condition. We were until the 3/1/2017 unaware of it being anything other thAn an old redundant tank to big to go through the hatch.
Several visitors are ex council or council workers and knew exactly what it was .
We are owner occupiers and have been in this house a long time .
It appears the council had no morAl or ethical need to advise us of its deadly covering.
Anyway I am still very very upset about it all but need to move forward and pick a company to remove this from the life of my family.
I have asked lots of questions but I have no real recommendations the council were able to tell me who was licenced with HSE because when I emailed them they said they would try and respond in 30 days
Does anyone know what's possible to clean while they are doing this ? I have an attached case full of all the birth certificates etc in the loft and old passports .
Does anyone on here do this for a living ?I don't know what else to ask
Thanks
