Cesspit split at the top

We recently moved into a property which has a cesspit (onion shaped). On its first emptying we noticed the top of the cesspit had split (see pic 1), also the drain next to it which took the effluent had virtually collapsed (see pic 2) though we have had this re-built. The section of the cesspit that is damaged I guess would only cause a problem if it become blocked and filled to the top with waste. Should we however look to repair this (if is is repairable) or maybe look into getting the whole lot replaced? Thanks for your time.

Pic 1 isn't really a problem as long as nothing is dropping in.

Pic 2 needs some work. Get rid of everything loose and re bench the manhole with either grit sand or ballast mixed with extra rapid cement. It looks built up with fats/grease. Has it been blocked.

And it's not a cesspit, it's a Klargester septic tank.

Yes, sorry of course it is a septic tank.

1) Nothing should drop in it when covered but a cracked tank is pretty much illegal so I have discovered so we will look into replacing it.

2) The drain was completely re-benched with the old surrounds ripped out and replaced with concrete sections.

1 it's a raising piece that is distorted - not cracked ! You can see where the plastic raising piece (riser) meets -not joins to- the fibreglass of the klargester tank . That short piece is all that needs replacing.

Cant tell from the pic, but is the polystyrene ball still in the bottom hemisphere of the tank, to seal off the bottom chamber when the tank is full?

I think I can see the cone and ball on my screen Hugh.

Do you think it was distorted when it was first fitted? Is it was properly round it looks like it wouldn't fit in the square concrete riser.

I am getting it t looked at next week. I always thought these come as a single unit with no replaceable parts?

Repairs can be effected from the top sometimes. Seen them with collapsed internal dividers, that have then been removed and a new divider suspended on wire ropes, glued to the neck to hold them in place. Ok, until hydrogen sulphide rots the wire ropes and it falls in again.....

Cool, are you happy with the distorted riser? I would be.

Did you have it emptied so you could inspect it or just routine maintenance?

It was due to be emptied so took the opportunity to take a good look at it. Am I happy with the distorted riser? Should I be?

I wouldn't be bothered about it, as long as it does the job.

Isn't it illegal to have a septic tank that isn't fully sealed? Can't gasses escape into the ground?
