What you require a VPN for? If it is just to connect from (say) home to your workplace, then you can set up a connection to allow your PC to "tunnel" through the internet to your workplace. All (recent) flavours of Windows and, I believe both Linux and Mac support this natively.
If, however, you are looking for a VPN solution to make it look like you are in a different country, then that is a totally different kettle of fish and will require a commercial solution.

There are plenty of free options, but you really need to ask yourself if I am not paying for this service with money, what am I paying for it with?

VPNs are pretty cheap these days. If security is important to you then consider a paid for service.

Just to throw in. The PPTP (Point to Point Tunnelling Protocol) VPN is now considered insecure. Apple have chosen to cease support for this natively in IOS10.
As mentioned, exactly what you are trying to achieve will determine the best approach. Any details?

I used Real VNC 4 which with XP worked well, however now I use Remote Desktop Connection which seems to work far better, the computer being accessed needs to have a password and it took a little time to work out how to put in the correct computer name, user name, and password, but once done it worked well and does not cost.

My son says the computers must be using the Pro version of Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 10, I am not sure about this?

I haven't done it yet, but VPNs are supposed to be a way of stopping the marketing companies getting a hold of your details, and so stops them bombarding you with adverts. Even on this site, I get adverts for things I've been looking at on eBay, so I'll be following this thread carefully.

NO. It is NOT a way of stopping Marketing/Advertising.
A VPN is (hopefully) a way of hiding what you are doing (downloading) from anyone, except (possibly) the VPN provider/company in any such countries where it is provided.
It is to be hoped that any such provider would resist to the limit any urge from any Government entity to provide access to any of the encrypted information provided via their service.
While you may be able to access such a "service" without payment, I would be quite doubtful of any such service which may be provided to you for nothing.

The main use of such VPN services is for downloading certain material which, while it may be "copyright", is quite available. The holders of the copyright on this material are quite anxious to pressure governments to stop the downloading of such material.
So it goes on. A VPN connection allows one to download (or upload) information without other "Authorities" being able to determine what it is that you are doing.

Whilst that might be the main use of a VPN nowadays, they we're originally designed as a way for a small company with several sites to stay in touch with each other, and for the stay to log on to the office network when out on the road, hence the initial idea of "Virtual Private (office) Network". What I'm referring to, is an article in the Dec 16 Computer Shopper magazine, entitled use a VPN to hide your browsing, and having had a quick look at the article, because you are constantly changing your IP address, whilst it doesn't stop the adverts, it cuts down the ability to target you with specific adverts because it can't profile you so well.

The browser from torproject.org gives you anonymous browsing for free, whist EpressVPN charges, but lets you view the American Netflix, which I think is a valid use for these things. But I had no idea that VPNs had developed to such an extent.

Where are you seeing adverts? I only use the forum part of the site but I've never seen an advert. If you are constantly getting pop up adverts then that would suggest you've been infected - well you PC has! Have you run MalwareBytes anti malware (https://www.malwarebytes.com/ - go for the free version). Once you have run that use Spybot S&D (https://www.safer-networking.org/dl/ -again, free version). If you are using Firefox or SeaMonkey browsers (I know nothing about Microshaft browsers - never use them) make sure you set them to NOT accept third party cookies. Also make sure 'no tracking' is turned on. Try all that and see if it cuts your adverts right down

Where are you seeing adverts

I'm using MS edge under W10, and I get adverts at the top and the bottom of the page, and they are all relevant to what we end up discussing. It's the advertising that's keeping this site going, not the generosity of their big hearts - no subs to pay though.

I've run the malware, and it's fund nothing, but I haven't managed to get Spybot to run yet, so that's my next step, then I'll try running different browsers.

The targeted ads you are seeing come from cookies stored in your browser, your use of facebook and facebook messenger, wattsapp, hotmail, gmail, withings, fitbit etc. All these companies mine your data and sell it. They get around data privacy laws by hashing your identity. If something is free to use - unless its open source, its free because you are the product.

I would pay a bit and go for NordVPN as it's reliable and easy to use. In combination with tor you will get an absolute anonymity and privacy.
