Can anyone help me with this? I rent, and I'm on day/ night rate electricity with edf. Now shamefully I noticed sometime ago that there has never been any display or life coming from my hot water control panel, a horstmann Electronic 7 series 2, as below

Since I had hot water I didn't really worry about it until now. So I isolated it, opened it up and had a look...

So what appears to have been done is the 'Live in' (which should be in connection 1 on far right) and the 'live out to immersion' (connection 5 on the left) have been connected to bypass the controller.

So it seems my hot water is constantly being kept hot by the lower element whenever the thermostat calls for heat, which I imagine is costing me a lot more than it needs to.

Firstly, for what reason might somebody do this? Secondly, were it all to be reconnected as it is supposed to be, would it be likely to work? It has likely been disconnected for a few years. The water tank has two elements and seems in good order.

Any help very much appreciated!!

It looks like the Horstmann has died (they do that sometimes)and someone has bypassed the off-peak connection.

As you surmise, it looks like you are not getting any off peak benefit fit the DHW.

Your landlord should be required to fix this, properly.
