Hello all;

While backing to get out a of very tight parking lot, I ran into a concrete post (which was in my blind spot, I wasn't not watching where I was going- I could see the one behind it perfectly!) and
cracked the plastic part of my bumper (please see photo).
We will soon be driving to visit my parents-in-law, and as such I was wondering if anyone happens to have any tips on how I could possibly fix this from home? (My husband was not amused by the suggestion of duck tape- even if it is the same colour as the paintwork!)
Thank you in advance for your time!
The Mrs

Tape is OK for a temp repair, Best bet is search on line for bumper repair services, lots around that will come out to you. Just one example here not, recommencing them as I haven't used this firm just an example.

I had a scratch repair done at home some years ago when some idiot scratched graffiti on the side of my van I can't remember the company but it was a fair bit cheaper than a body shop and done in no time.

Thanks for your tip! I will take a look at local services in the area, but am worried it might be a little too big for chips away- you never know until you ask though....

Most body shops have a smart repairer at their beck and call.....this bumper could be reformed in situ so you are just left with the crack visible, rather than that chunk that is displaced.
As you can see, it has split rather than gouged, and the bit that's sticking out can be popped back behind from whence it came.

I bet that would superglue back together. Obviously you'll be left with a visible crack tho.

Fantastic! thanks for this suggestion- something I can do at home (I am rather tight with money:D)
I have some touch up paint, do you think that if this was applied thick enough it might be able to disguise the crack?

Try the glue first and see how it turns out. You might draw more attention to it by painting it.

See how flexible the bumper is.....by careful bending it should be possible to spring the crack back together. Sometimes heating up with a hairdryer pays dividends! You'll then be left with a crack mark, and decide whether to live with it or not.
Stand by with the glue when the crack goes back together.....if that's successful it can be opened again to get the adhesive in.

Superglue won't work I'm afraid. It has great pull strength, but poor torsional strength, so the vibration of the car will twist the bumper, and the superglue will fail. If you can get behind the bumper, and hold a piece of wood against the crack, and use epoxy resin, that might hold better.

I agree Superglue is over rated seldom works well on anything but fingers!
With constant wet and vibration it will fail.
I think the pro's actually melt the plastic to weld and make the repair.

Great many thanks all for your help! I will dig out my hair dryer and give your suggestions a try- at least I have a use for my hair dryer now!
As for the epoxy, I was out looking for some yesterday, and I saw some of that quick setting, able to withstand heavy weights, moulding putting (sorry not sure of its correct name), and was wondering if this might work? Any opinions? (had used it before to fix a leak on a towel radiator and did a somewhat decent job... so thought, maybe it might work on the car as well??)

Epoxy is brilliant stuff Araldite is the most well known Not sure how good it will be with flexible plastic though.

Araldite is in fact a wonderful adhesive but I don't think its really the one for ABS bumpers......however, your epoxy putty could work quite well as its just applied around the back of the tear rather than in the joint itself so at least you can't make things worse! If you can get to the back of the damage and all is very clean and dry there, by all means give it a go.
Can you give us a shot of the damage once you've managed to get it back into place?
John :)

Thanks for the conformation! I will probably get around to doing it this weekend, and once I have done so I will post a photo!
Thanks!
