Installing a NEST to a Vaillant Turbomax

Well wait a week and tell us what you think of the Nest!

As an approved Nest installer I would suggest that contrary to the suggestion above that you call a Nest installer rather than an electrician. We are all ( well mostly ) gas registered and so able to identify and advise on boiler issues.

Sorry to drag up an old post...

I've got the same boiler (ish), wired my nest up as per what I thought was correct (based on old timer that was there).

Current wiring @ boiler:

When nest starts heating unfortunately the boiler does not..

I think, if i bridge L and 2 on the heatlink it should work.. However I was hoping you clever chaps/chappets might be able to confirm this/tell me thats a stupid idea and that i'll blow myself up..

It just started working with no changes.. will keep an eye on it.

Oh dear, I see you've used a Neutral wire as a Live :-/ do try to use the correct colours, or at least mark them correctly

Thanks and noted. That was left over wiring from the old timer. I'll mark them later, the boiler and connections were inherited from owners before last, unfortunately wiring around the house has many such quirks

It would be helpful if someone could confirm that the connections are correct, boiler gets power separately and as far as I can tell it just requires the common and call for heat wired into three and four.

Nest seems to be working correctly but it would be great if someone more experienced than I could confirm that the wiring (colours aside) is correct and i've not missed something. I know that if it works then it's probably fine but I can't get the nagging thought out of my head..

Hi All,

Firstly a very happy new year to you all.

Customary to the new year i've made some new year resolution.... 1 of them being upgrading my old thermostat to a fancy Nest one. Im looking at installing this myself and i've come to a bit of a standstill, so im hoping you can help me with this. Any help will be very appriciated.

ive attached pic of my current thermostat and boiler and also the wires that go into the boiler.

I believe Delfi has an identical connection to my boiler (gauging from you pics). Delfi would you be so kind to share any pics of how your nest is connected to the boiler so that i can get an idea?

cbasnet i believe you managed to connect the Nest as well... would you be able to share any pictures of the final connections?

Anyone else that can help me will be great.

Because the colour of a wire is not necessarily indicative of it's use pictures may not give the whole picture.

I install Nests and whilst many are straightforward some are a real pain.

Green wires for example should only be used for earth connections. Some installers use them for live wires without any marking!

I'll be looking at completely removing the old thermostat cables and starting from scratch which i believed Delfi managed to do. Hence the request for pics as a guide.

Anyone else that maybe able to help looking at the pics of the boiler above?

I have to say that it applies to perhaps more than 50% of those I see with hot water cylinders!

The stat needs three wires, all potentially live, and are usually connected with a three core cable.

Hi All,

So over the weekend i finally took the plunge and fitted my nest thermostat to my Villiant Turbomax combi boiler (Excactly the same boiler as Delfi's).... Considering Delfi had some sucess in installing the Nest himself (with the help of Mikeyd) and also the fact that i have the exact same boiler I decided that Mikeyd's instructions would do me justice too.

I'm really pleased to share that my thermostat works like a charm! I followed Mikeyd's instructions to the dot and under 30 mins, i was up and running. Thank you Mikeyd for your help and Delfi for confirming that he's instructions had worked.

Since your boiler control from the Nest is only on/off then setting the boiler maximum power could be of interest.

Normally it is set to the heat loss of the building. But many are left at the maximum which is sometimes counter productive.

Hi all can anyone just confirm two things for me before I install my nest thermostat. I have a vaillant Turbomax 824e combi boiler and was going to follow Mikeyd instructions but just wanted to know what I should leave the timer switch on after the nest is installed it has 3 settings half moon, sun, or clock. And also on the picture I'm attaching it shows the red cable 3 and 4 looped together what do I do with this cable do I remove it or leave it where it is.
One more thing I wanted to ask does the nest controller need to be 30cm away from the boiler or is it ok if it is right next to it.

Sorry I forgot to mention I don't have a thermostat set up on my boiler at the moment. There was never one installed on the boiler.

I think I've figured his out just need confirmation from someone before I go ahead. I think I remove the loop wire going from 3 and 4 terminal in the boiler then just leave the timer function on the front of the boiler in the middle position the sun.
What does anyone think about this.

You mean a four core cable surely. A three core cable would have brown, blue and earth wires.
