Hi,

We will shortly be recarpeting our hallway. It has suspended floorboards so is not the warmest of halls. Which underlay is the best one for its insulation properties. Also, would it benefit from some form of paper under the underlay (perhaps newspaper?) or would that be a waste of effort.

Grateful for any advice.

You should find that the specs for the various underlays mention their insulation values, perhaps as TOGs.

If there are huge drafts from between the floorboards then something to block them might help a bit, but otherwise no there is no need for anything under the underlay.

If you really want to improve the insulation of this floor, add proper insularion under the floor.

Wool felt underlay seems to have the highest tog value.

I think of it's draughty your main benefit would be from laying something to block the draughts. Otherwise it's like a woolly jumper on a windy day. After that, any carpet will feel warmer, the thicker the better, but for a proper job even glass wool suspended between joists will make it actually warm rather then just not cold.

Thank you for your very helpful replies.

Looks like my best options are either Tredaire Dreamwalk (Top 3.13) or Wilsons MultiRich 56 (Tog 3.6). Would, for some reason, either of these be better than the other for stairs?

Thanks for the idea of insulating under the floorboards. Will definitely give it some thought.
