A friend used to have a little homemade trolley, just a few inches above ground level with a couple of wheels, to move awkward things around singlehanded. I once saw him get it under a piano, for example.

I'm considering making something similar, mainly because I have some bulky deliveries soon (mainly plasterboard) and Sod's law says they will come when my friendly neighbours are out.

Does anyone here have any clever designs for "carrying helpers"?

Yes, I was looking at Screwfix's range of castors and wondering which I need for my courtyard...

Best ones to look out for if you can get them, are the dollys that are usually under bread crates. These days they're often fibreglass reinforced plastic but some of the older ones are welded rolled steel angle and they're solid.

I had the casters off one to put on my site box ages back, and it's a big site box, not a little one, full of heavy gear and they've stood up to site life for years. For everything else just make your own out of timber or plywood. I've been making one tonight oddly enough for my Makpac tanos cases. They're £60-80 to buy with makita branding, but a set of cheapo casters off ebay and some decent ply I found in the skip on site and I'm sorted.

You probably need a minimum 75mm castor for external, and rubber will be easier to manoeuvre, but less hard-wearing.

Thanks! Lots of pictures of sheep but also a few interesting things like this:

We used to use these for manoeuvring glass shopfronts from the lorry to the frame, much easier than straps and suckers, pricey though just for plaster board.

Unless you have totally flat access into you home [unlikely] a board dolly won't be of much use.

lidl or aldi have big castors at the moment
Along the "same"lines in the late nineties I was working in London and had the need for a small trolley. We found an abandoned supermarket trolley (ok not sure if it was Lidl or Aldi but you get the idea) and sawed the basket off and replaced it with a piece of ply. Robert's your mother's brother so to speak.
