Repairing broken remote?

Somebody in our harmonious family (not myself) chucked the TV remote on the floor last night, popping the casing open slightly, and having reassembled it, it still doesn't seem to be working. I've replaced the batteries and checked that the buttons are pressing the contacts properly, but that hasn't helped.

Is there any likely simply fix I might be missing? Could the IR LED have died, or is it just as likely to be something else?

IR emitter could of been broken with the fall most likely if the batteries are seated correctly. Another component could of been broken though. If you shake the remote do you hear anything loose? you might need to listen real close if its the emitter that's broken. You could try to replace that component if you have a soldering iron and know which emitter to buy. If not, time to go on ebay to hopefully find a replacement. You can also test the remote by putting your phone camera on record and pointing the remote to it and press a button. If the remote is showing signs of life you will see the emitter flash on your phone screen.

Google the price of a new one/ replacement as well

My old bedroom music system one fell apart and I sourced a new one on eBay for a fiver

An absolutely identical one is £40 on Ebay (!?), but I picked up one that is identical but for one or two button markings for £7.60, so hopefully that will do the job. Wasn't confident it was the diode and didn't want to chase the fault around the PCB. Cheers for comments.

what can often happen when remotes are dropped or thrown the contacts connecting to the battery ends can depress or deform causing a gap so needing to be stretched or bent to give a spring contact again
use you mobile camera pointing at the remote output this will show as a flickering/constant light on your phone screen when you press any button on the remote control
