This is about a holiday house abroad that is visitited rarely. Upon arriving weeds are up to 2 meters tall. As the house is visited rarely and the amount of land is huge just cutting it or spraying several times per year is not practical.

Are there any solutions that will offer a semi-permanent solution? I am thinking about how nice it would be if there were soil fertility supressors that cold suppress any growth, say, by a factor of 10.

Any ideas that would solve a problem (without involving cutting/spraying every month or two or a huge expense such as tarmacking it all over) would be welcome. Ideal solution would involve some growth remaining but very little, not too tall, and without regular maintainance.

Pathclear a couple of times a year. It leaves a film on the surface of the soil that prevents seeds germinating.

If the soil is ploughed, dug or otherwise disturbed, it breaks up the film and seeds then grow.

Pulling weeds up disturbs the soil so it encourages regrowth.

You might have to contact a horticultural or agricultural supplier to see what chemicals are permitted and available in the country where this home is. Such chemicals are often used around electrical substations and the like, which may also have a shingle surface to be inhospitable to plant life.

There are also products like "Cutlass" sprayed onto bushes and hedges to make them grow more slowly. It might not be available (Dikegulac).

Places that have a lot of holiday homes often have contractors who will keep them tidy.

You don't say if "rarely" means four times a year or once every four years.

Get a local gardener to come in on a regular basis would seem to be the best course of action. I don't like using chemicals if I can avoid it , regular pulling and hoeing will eradicate pretty much most weeds over time they eventually run out of energy to grow if constantly removed of their greenery.
