I am planning to paint my bannisters and have read all the forums on the pros and cons of water based and oil based paints, satinwood, eggshell and gloss. So the spindles I figure I can get away with pretty much what I like but the bannister needs to be much more hardwearing...so what about floor paint? I'm figuring if it can withstand heavy furniture and clumpy boots it should be ok for lots of hands....am I missing something obvious?

Yes you are. Go and walk up your staircase right now, then walk down it. Then ask yourself 'did I actually touch the banister rail?'. Any finish designed for timber will work- gloss will be easier to clean, oil-based gloss will last longer and look better BUT takes longer and more care to put on. Don't use any breed of emulsion- it'll look rubbish very quickly. Do sand before painting.
