Asbestos test and clean air certificate

There are UKAS companies where I can take it. It isn't easy getting there but I am making arrangements.

I took it to the UKAS company where I had made the arrangements and they did it the same day.

It was fixed around the 22mm copper pipe and had a slot very much like the grey ones now. It was totally encased in a tight linen bag. It was not broken or disintegrated in any way. It was held on with straps.

I hope that it's still in place? Disturbance not recommended without the appropriate health & safety equipment/clothing.

There are a few government web pages with some advice, some local councils may take small amounts if appropriately handled. Or you may have to get someone in to do it.

Thanks and yes it has been taken to the Council's hazardous waste tip.

Yes simple to describe but very difficult to deal with.
Thanks again for your help Woody

They will remove it at a fixed cost (get quotes once you have the test results, it wll be based on material and quantity). You wont need an air test, and the HSE guides state this explicitly. Tell your "national contractor" this. Or you can skip the test and just go straight to the removal. Again no air test will be necessary and you will get a removal certificate to show your "national contractor". That will be enough for them to carry on.

Have you asked to see your "national contractor's" risk and method statements? You need to read the previous posts and heed them. Their risk and method statements will describe how they must work. And it will include not asking for unecessary air tests.

Woody, still having probs. Could you please let me have a link to the HSE guides that state explicitly that I wont need an air test.

Secondly, I read somewhere ( can't find it now) that this tiny piece of asbestos comes within the rules allowing a householder to remove it themselves to the Council hazards tip without any of this at all. Is this correct?

Thanks for help

Monmouthshire council will take small amounts. I think it needs dbl bagging and some stickers indicating that it's asbestos waste.

Where are you?

Asbestos essentials for non-licenced removal work - www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/essentials

Probably A24 or A37 ?, but it depends what is closest. Either way, all these guides state that "Clearance air sampling is not normally required".

The "normally" bit would relate to when the material is in on place, in one piece and removable as per the guidelines without disturbance. If there are bits of debris all over the place and would be disturbed as part of the work then that would not be normal and would potentially require reasurance testing afterwards.

May I also suggest A11 - Removing Asbestos Cement Debris - also states in section 'Clearance and Checking Off' "Clearance air sampling is not normally required"

In fact looks like most (all) the advisory sheets include the same statement.

Thanks both for this.

The large national company went ballistic when I said I had removed it and they wanted the loft decontaminated as well as a clean air certificate. It was only one piece one metre long and completely encased with no damage and did not break up at all. I did follow the instructions to remove it.

I am going with a different company but trying to establish where I am.

I did read in your info that pipe lagging material must not be worked on by other than an HSE-licensed contractor.

Thanks for help.
